MPs visit BAE Systems' apprentices

Gordon Birtwistle MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Apprenticeships, visited BAE Systems' Warton site in Lancashire last week and described BAE Systems' apprentices as “a credit to the Company”.

Mr Birtwistle, MP for Burnley, spent Thusday 1st November at Warton and BAE Systems' training school in Preston with other Group members Robin Walker MP and the Rt Hon Baroness Sharp of Guildford.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group focuses its attention on the changing demands and support needed by employers and apprentices across all sectors.

New apprentices, Alicia Humphries and Richard Bradley, who are just seven weeks into their career with the company gave the MPs a tour of the training school and explained the different skills they would learn during their apprenticeship.  During lunch, apprentices explained to MPs how they learned about our apprenticeship programme and the challenges facing young people on the heavy bias towards university education.

The visit included a tour of the Typhoon final assembly hangar and an opportunity to view the company’s next generation of unmanned air vehicles, demonstrating the skills that current and future apprentices will need.

During the visit Gordon Birtwistle said: “We’ve had a fantastic visit today. It’s been great to meet just a few of the 900,000 apprentices that are making a massive contribution to the UK economy. The apprentices I’ve met today are a credit to their company and BAE Systems should be very proud of them.”
