Today the Airport Operators Association (AOA), the trade body for UK airports, has announced that UK Airports Health & Safety Week 2024 will take place from Monday 13th – Sunday 19th May.

This follows the amazing success of 2023’s week, which saw airports up and down the country organise nature walks, airfield tours, trips up air traffic towers, rescue and fire service demonstrations, and a range of other events.

UK Airports Health & Safety Week is a national event coordinated by the AOA and supported by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, the Health and Safety Executive and aviation services provider, Leidos. Its aim is to promote safety improvement and development through experience and learning.

The slogan for the week will be ‘save tomorrow with safety today’ and there will be three themes around which airports will organise events and activities. These will be working at height, a safe airside environment and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Commenting on the launch, chief executive of the AOA, Karen Dee, said: “The health and safety of passengers, staff and local communities is the number one priority of airports, screening travellers, providing a healthy, safe workplace, and ensuring residents are protected. Airports Health and Safety Week is a chance to showcase everything airports and their partners do everyday of the year to make sure this is the case, and that UK aviation is the safest in the world.

“We cannot wait to see what airports have in store to highlight this year’s themes, which represent vital day-to-day considerations when working in aviation, with consequences that can reach well into the future. We hope that everyone has an enjoyable and safe week, and that people come away from it with a better understanding of how they can ‘save tomorrow with safety today.’”

Commenting on the work going into this year’s events, Adele Gammarano, the AOA’s airport regulation, safety and operations manager said: “We work closely with every airport around the country to understand what their priorities are, and help develop a range of events that are interesting, informative and relevant. This year promises to be the best one yet, with more activities than ever designed to reach as many passengers, team members and local residents as possible.”
