Birmingham Airport records over 1m passengers in April

Passenger figures recorded in April at Birmingham Airport have revealed the Midlands gateway saw over a million people travel through the terminal. This has resulted in a healthy 21.7% rate of growth when compared to the same month last year.

In total 1,063,290 passengers flew through Birmingham – over 189,000 more than the same month in 2016.

Long haul services saw a 6.3% increase but the most significant growth was on short haul services where 24.3% more footfall was recorded across the month.

Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive Officer at Birmingham Airport, said: “To be seeing over a million passengers in a month this early in the year is a great achievement for the airport and shows demand is growing rapidly year on year.

“April was our twenty sixth consecutive month of record breaking growth which is a fantastic achievement by the airport team. The busy Easter weekend did fall during the month and so this would have undoubtedly helped boost these figures.

“With a selection of new routes and airlines launching over the next few weeks, including British Airways, we only expect these passenger figures to continue growing as we approach the summer peak season.”

Scheduled traffic accounted for 94 per cent of the total, with charter passengers making up the remaining six per cent.

Scheduled traffic overall grew by 23.9 per cent, with significant year-on-year growth to Sofia (+297.9%), Bucharest (+222.2%), Faro (+138.1%), Larnaca (+104.3%), Geneva (+96.4%) and Sal Island (+90.1 %).
